Compo Lawyers in £352million NHS Hit

Ambulance chasing lawyers bled the NHS of a record £352million in legal fees last year.

Some firms demanded as much as £1,400 per hour, according to official stats.

One patient settled for £11,800 while their lawyers demanded £175,000.

Official figures reveal 1,000 claims a month were launched against hospitls last year, But almost half were dismssed as spurious.

Dia Chakravarty from the Taxpayers Alliance said: “Every penny lining the pockets of lawyers is a penny away from cancer drugs and nurses”.

Irwin Mitchell made the most from NHS negligence, receiving £28.7million in 2013.

Peter Walsh head of the charity Action against Medical Accidents, said: “Rather than spend on compensation and legal costs the NHS would do better to stop mistakes ( to true and actually care ).

In 2009 Roger Tarver – a former boss at City Hospital in Birmingham – was awarded a £370,000 payout plus £24,000 a year for life after fainting at work and claiming his job was “impossible”.

Last year the NHS paid out £1.2billion in compensation for hospital blunders. That included £840million to patients.
